Liquid Matrix

Liquid Matrix delves into the concept of printed paraboloids sculpted by the revolution of a liquid medium to explore endless possibilities. The key lies in empowering individuals with accessible knowledge to innovate solutions through design. Autonomous Design has the potential to drive progress during times of ongoing transformation.

To understand the potential of the machine, we started this project with 3 key questions:

  • What challenges will humanity confront in the upcoming decade?

  • Can design agencies impact various processes to create practical solutions?

  • How do we craft our tools and environments in a future shaped by self-production and emerging technologies?

In today's landscape, design is ubiquitous. The future demands innovative tools to flourish as a society.

Research

A century after the convergence of applied arts and industrial practice, as pioneered by the Bauhaus, we are witnessing a digital revolution where society has become increasingly reliant on technology. The contemporary designer navigates between the material and immaterial realms, constantly challenged by industrialisation and digitalisation. If this revolution is harnessed effectively, it offers the potential for self-manufacturing tools, sharing them, and addressing personal and social needs. The project, based on the reevaluation and critique of current serial production models, proposes an open, circular process that can be applied across various contexts and scenarios.

Conceptualisation

Liquid Matrix is a design and material research, which develops a process that allows producing variable matrices capable of being programmed for different requirements.

Using the force of gravity and centrifugal energy, the machine is enabled to print spectrums of paraboloids. The rotation speed of the aqueous medium is controlled analogously and digitally, which is conditioned by the liquid’s volume and the size of the container.

Value Proposition

This approach advocates for design as a discipline that responds to human behaviour and disposable mindsets. It is committed to an ecologic, economic, and social system, and it allows us to continue developing the process by changing the material, the scale, and the form.
